Intrathecal Morphine Pump Implants
A programmable implanted device that delivers pain medication directly to the spinal fluid — dramatically reducing systemic side effects.
What is Intrathecal Morphine Pump Implants?
An intrathecal drug delivery system (pain pump) is a small, implanted device that delivers pain medication directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. Because the medication acts at the spinal level, far smaller doses are needed compared to oral medications, which significantly reduces side effects such as sedation, constipation, and cognitive impairment while providing superior pain control.
What to Expect
- 1
A screening trial confirms you are a good candidate before permanent implant
- 2
The pump is surgically implanted under the skin of the abdomen in a minimally invasive procedure
- 3
A catheter delivers medication directly to the intrathecal space around the spinal cord
- 4
The pump is programmed and refilled periodically in our office
- 5
Medication type and dosage can be adjusted non-invasively at any time
Who This Treatment Helps
Patients with severe chronic pain from cancer, failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, or other conditions who have not achieved adequate relief from oral medications or other interventional therapies.
