Percutaneous Disc Decompression

A minimally invasive procedure that reduces disc pressure to relieve nerve pain without open surgery.

What is Percutaneous Disc Decompression?

Percutaneous disc decompression (PDD) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure designed to treat contained herniated discs that are compressing nearby nerves. Using a small needle-like probe guided by fluoroscopy (live X-ray), a small amount of disc material is removed or vaporized, reducing internal disc pressure and relieving the nerve compression that causes radiating pain.

What to Expect

  • 1

Imaging review to confirm a contained disc herniation is the source of your pain

  • 2

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and light sedation as an outpatient

  • 3

A small probe is guided to the disc under fluoroscopic imaging

  • 4

Disc material is removed or vaporized to reduce pressure on the nerve

  • 5

Most patients return home the same day and notice improvement within weeks

Who This Treatment Helps

Patients with a contained disc herniation causing radiculopathy (arm or leg pain, numbness, or weakness) who have not responded to conservative care such as physical therapy, medications, or epidural steroid injections, and who wish to avoid open surgery.
